In an effort to save the Cycloop Mountains Nature Reserve, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) provided 20,000 bamboo seedlings to the Papua Provincial Government on Thursday (16/11). Planting bamboo is useful for preventing natural disasters, disturbances and damage that result in degradation and deforestation in the Cycloop Mountains Nature Reserve, as well as providing clear natural boundaries for the community to differentiate between spaces that are included in the Nature Reserve and those that are not.

The Cycloop Mountains Nature Reserve itself was designated as a conservation area in 1979. In this area, there are endemic flora and fauna, a diversity of ecosystems including lowland rainforests, mountain forests, secondary forests, grasslands and mangroves. This area also has a hydrological function as a climate regulator, and a center of diversity for the evolution of distribution and the formation of natural flora and fauna life.

PTFI Vice President Environmental, Gesang Setyadi, said that this action was PTFI's concrete manifestation of supporting the Papua Provincial Government and the Ministry of Environment - Forestry (KLHK). This support is shown through the Cycloop Mountains Nature Reserve Rescue Program through the planting movement of around 60 thousand bamboo seedlings or 78 kilometers long as a buffer zone, starting from Pasir 6 in Jayapura City to Maribu in Ravenirara District in Jayapura Regency, as a sign boundaries of the Cycloop Mountains Preserve.

"PTFI is also involved in implementing Cycloop rehabilitation activities together with the Papua Provincial Government. "This effort will have a positive impact on the environment in the Cycloop Mountains Nature Reserve, which is also in line with PTFI's commitment to participate in sustainably protecting the environment to preserve the environment and support ecological balance," said Gesang at the ceremony handing over bamboo seedlings to the Papua Provincial Government.

The Governor of Papua Province, represented by Acting Assistant Secretary for the Economy and People's Welfare Suzana Wanggai, appreciated PTFI's support in efforts to save the Cycloop Mountains Nature Reserve. “I am very grateful to PTFI for its assistance to the Papua Provincial Government for helping to preserve the Cycloop Mountains Nature Reserve. "Cycloop is our source of life, therefore we have to take care of nature and nature will take care of us," said Suzana.

"I also hope that all components of society can do the same thing, especially BUMN and BUMD in Papua Province," added Suzana.

Apart from supporting the bamboo planting program to save the Cycloop Mountains Nature Reserve, PTFI has also collaborated with the Watershed & Protected Forest Management Center (BPDASHL) in implementing the River Watershed (DAS) rehabilitation program in Jayapura Regency and City since 2021. This watershed rehabilitation activity is PT Freeport Indonesia's first activity outside the Special Mining Business Permit (IUPK) area. (CorpComm)
