Mine maintenance employees Fernando Luque Cruz and Jorge Canahuire Huamaní delivered a one-two punch at Peru's 2018 Best Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Competition, taking first and second place respectively.

Luque is the second Cerro Verde employee to claim the national champion title, earned first by Rony Lisandro Huaraca in 2016. Luque and Canahuire were among 1,400 contestants who competed in the three-stage contest designed by Ferreycorp to highlight the work of technicians and enhance their technical development.

Also competing were Cerro Verde employees Rolando Mendoza Gutiérrez and Sergio Uchupe Daza, who finished in the top nine alongside Luque and Canahuire to advance to the last stage of the competition.

"These results are not by chance or accident, but the result of committed employees and a strong mentoring program created and led by the entire Mine Maintenance team," said Derek Cooke, President-Cerro Verde. "Congratulations to Fernando, Jorge, Rolando and Sergio, as well as the entire Mine Maintenance team!"

The national competition is comprised of three stages, with competitors first completing an online theoretical exam. The top finishers from that stage advance to a practical exam on equipment and simulators conducted onsite. The field is then whittled down to the top nine contestants who perform maintenance work and complete hands-on technical exams in the final stage.

Luque, a graduate of TESCUP in the area of heavy equipment maintenance, was awarded a heavy equipment maintenance certification, a cash prize and a trip to Brazil to visit Caterpillar's Sao Paulo plant.

"I always have believed the hardest person to beat is yourself – the day I achieved this, I overcame my personal doubts and fears," Luque said. "I dedicate this achievement to God, for allowing me to reach this important moment in my professional life, and to my family and especially my mother, who always has believed in me no matter what the situation."

Canahuire was awarded a scholarship to attend an advanced level course in machine systems and a cash prize.

"This achievement is the result of hard work, ongoing training and the opportunity from Ferreycorp to demonstrate our skills," Canahuire said. "I dedicate this achievement to my family and my wife, who always encourages me to achieve my goals."
