PT Freeport Indonesia recently sponsored 14 middle school students from the company’s Yayasan Pendidikan Jayawijaya school to attend the Diversity for National Expedition conference (Ekspedisi Bhinneka Bagi Bangsa) that took place October 24-28 at the Outward Bound Indonesia Eco Campus in Jatiluhur, Purwakarta, West Java.

The five-day event brings together students from throughout Indonesia to participate in nature-based, character education activities, including mountain climbing, flag hoisting, reciting the Youth Pledge and raft building. The program is designed to help increase student understanding and respect for others.

“We have gathered youth from Aceh to Papua, in total 13 provinces, all representing different ethnic origins, religions, race and ages. The children partake in various nature-based activities, such as mountain climbing, that teach cooperation, mutual tolerance and understanding,” said Wendy Kusumawidagdo, the program’s founder.

The 14, seventh- through ninth-grade students from YPJ live and go to school within the PTFI Jobsite in Papua and have limited interaction with students with different backgrounds.

“During the various activities, they adjusted to mingling with other kids from different backgrounds,” said Omih Gobay, YPJ Head of Public Relations and Government Relations.

Mark Jenkins, YPJ School Director said “The Outward Bound program is a superb opportunity to develop the character of our students -honesty, open-mindedness, empathy, responsibility and Integrity -  their resilience, collaborative skills and perseverance. We run an Extended Study program with our Grade 8 students every year.”

Furthermore, Mark emphasized that the the Bhinneka Bangsa program is an opportunity for YPJ students to develop their leadership skills, celebrate and demonstrate the fundamental values and principles that define Indonesia as a nation. The representation of our Papuan students in the event highlights the diversity of Indonesia and the strength that emanates from the synergy of the many groups that comprise ‘Indonesia’.
