23 October 2023
In recognition of the community investment program demonstrated by PT Freeport Indonesia, Indonesia Coffee Summit forum granted the 2023 Indonesia Coffee Heroes to PTFI on Monday, October 23 at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta.
As part of the company’s commitment to give back to the people around PTFI operational areas, PTFI is encouraging cultivation of Arabica coffee in Papua by growers hailing from the Amungmen Tribe in the districts of Tembagapura and Hoea. Currently, 158 coffee growers are engaged in coffee cultivation with sales amounting to Rp 500 million per year.
The business development of the Arabica coffee program by local communities in the highlands started operating in 1998 and will continue to be refined. Currently, Arabica coffee is being grown on land covering a total of 35 hectares.
Engel Enoch, PTFI Vice President of Community Development disclosed that PTFI has been committed to supporting the Amungme people with development of coffee cultivation in the Papua highlands.
“This endeavor was initiated with research to identify the potential and suitability of cultivating Arabica coffee in the area. We began by growing Arabica coffee from seeds obtained from other areas in Papua such as Wamena," Engel said.
In order to bolster community efforts, Engel said, PTFI is assisting coffee growers with the marketing of their products. At this time, Amungme Gold is easily available in Timika City. There is an Amungme Gold Coffee House in Timika where coffee lovers can enjoy coffee with a local flavor.
