27 August 2024
Mimika, August 21 2024 - PT Freeport Indonesia appreciates Mitra Masyarakat Hospital (RSMM) for its remarkable service to over 2.7 million patients during its 25 years of operation in Mimika. RSMM, owned by the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK), which manages partnership funds from PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI).
“We express our highest appreciation to RSMM for serving 2.7 million patients. This is truly extraordinary,” said Nathan Kum, Senior Vice President of Community Development at PTFI, during the hospital’s 25th-anniversary celebration at the hospital's hall in SP-5, Mimika Regency, on Tuesday, August 20.
Nathan emphasized PTFI’s ongoing commitment to support health programs that have a direct impact on the community. He also invited the leadership, staff, and employees of RSMM to work together in managing the hospital to ensure it continues providing top-quality care, particularly to the seven indigenous tribes: Amungme, Kamoro, Moni, Damal, Dani, Nduga, and Ekari.
Nathan noted that PTFI's contributions to RSMM through YPMAK include financing medical treatments for the seven tribes of indigenous Papuan patients, especially for cases not covered by the national health insurance program (BPJS). YPMAK also helps cover operational costs, including the maintenance of RSMM’s infrastructure annually. Over time, PTFI, through YPMAK, has also accommodated the evacuation needs of patients from these tribes who require referrals to higher-level hospitals when BPJS coverage is unavailable.
Representing the Amungme Community Leaders and also as the Chairman of the Amungme Tribal Customary Council (LEMASA), Stingal Johny Beanal expressed his gratitude for RSMM’s free healthcare services to the seven tribes. “Happy 25th anniversary, RSMM. The Amungme Tribal Customary Council (LEMASA) are grateful and thankful to RSMM, YCTP, YPMAK, and Freeport for serving the healthcare needs of the Amungme, Kamoro, and five other related tribes,” he said.
Stingal also affirmed that LEMASA and the Amungme community will continue to support Freeport's programs through YPMAK. “The healthcare services at RSMM are highly beneficial for the seven tribes as we are given priority in receiving medical care at this hospital. We hope that RSMM will continue to improve as it enters its new chapter,” he added.
RSMM began operations in Timika in August 1999. It has been classified as a Type C hospital since 2008 and is now operated by the Caritas Timika Papua Foundation (YCTP). The hospital provides both outpatient and inpatient care with a capacity of 156 beds, 370 medical staff, including 26 general practitioners and specialists, 185 nurses and midwives, and 159 other medical and non-medical staff.
The 25th-anniversary celebration of RSMM in Timika was attended by Willem Naa, Assistant 1 of the Mimika Regional Government, Antonius Tapipea, Chairman of YCTP, Emanuel Kemong, a key figure in promoting healthcare and education, and several YPMAK representatives. During his speech, RSMM Director Dr. Joni Ribo Tandisau Spb-KBD highlighted the hospital's continuous progress and its commitment to ongoing improvements.
“We extend our gratitude to the community, government, and all parties who have supported RSMM's growth into a trusted hospital for the people,” said Dr. Tandisau.
