Freeport Indonesia Shows Appreciation for the Firefighters

Gresik, December 19, 2024 – Tony Wenas, the President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the firefighting teams for their swift response in handling the fire incident at the Common Gas Cleaning Plant unit of the PTFI smelter back on October 14, 2024.

"The exceptionally quick response, alertness, and outstanding coordination among various firefighting unites, both within PTFI and from external units, ensured the fire on October 14, 2024 was swiftly contained and extinguished," said Tony during the PTFI Firefighter Appreciation Night held in Gresik on Tuesday (December 17).

Tony explained that during the fire incident at the smelter, PTFI's Emergency Response Team, in collaboration with several institutions and companies surrounding the PTFI Smelter, worked tirelessly to address the situation. He assured that all employees were safe, with no injuries reported. The safety of all employees is the company’s top priority.

The recognition from PTFI was awarded to the Surabaya Fire and Rescue Department and the Gresik Fire and Rescue Department. The presentation was witnessed by Andik Fadjar Tjahjono, Head of the East Java Provincial Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), representing the Acting Governor of East Java.

Acknowledgment for inter-agency cooperation and collaboration in ensuring workplace safety was also extended to PT Berkah Manyar Sejahtera, PT Petrokimia Gresik, and the Maspion Industrial Zone.
 
Andik Fadjar Tjahjono welcomed the initiative. “PTFI’s effort to honor the contributions of firefighters and rescue personnel not only recognizes their services but also underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability and safety in its operational areas,” Andik stated.
 
Eko Budiono, a member of PTFI’s Emergency Response Team, shared insights from the incident. “During the event, we guided employees to evacuate to safe points and made sure no one was left behind. Additionally, we inspected the surrounding area to prevent further hazards. All teams worked quickly and supported each other, and coordination with external firefighting units was seamless,” he explained.
 
Reflecting on the experience, Eko emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety. “Following procedures with discipline truly saves lives. This incident has heightened my awareness that danger can strike at any time, and we must always be prepared. It also reinforced the importance of safety drills and training,” he said.
 
Eko also expressed gratitude to PTFI management for their recognition. “My team and I extend our deepest thanks for this exceptional acknowledgment. It truly makes us feel proud and valued as part of the firefighting team. Once again, thank you for this event,” Eko concluded.
