TIMIKA - PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) together with 34 young employees from the Environment Division carried out the planting of 5,000 Rhizophora mucronata mangrove seedlings in Muara Ajkwa, Mimika (23/08) with a spacing of 2m x 2m or 2 hectares.

The National Nature Conservation Day (HKAN) is commemorated every August 10 based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 22 of 2009 as an effort to protect nature sustainably and make nature conservation part of the nation's attitude to life and culture. HKAN is also a campaign to raise public awareness and involvement in conserving the natural ecosystems around the country’s natural habitat. The theme for this year’s National Nature Conservation Day 2024 is Actualization of Nature Conservation for the Young Generation with the tagline "Youth for Sustainable Nature"

General Superintendent of Environmental Central System & Project, Sugio, said that by planting 5,000 mangrove seedlings on 2 hectares of land was expected to be one of the environmental conservation efforts in protecting and maintaining biodiversity in our surrounding environment.

"National Nature Conservation Day is one of the momentum for the younger generation to reflect on the preciousness of nature as the foundation of human life. The basic needs of the society are increasing day by day, so there needs to be a commitment to maintain and support improvement actions to save the preservation of our earth," said Sugio.

PT Freeport Indonesia is committed to continue contributing to nature conservation and biodiversity programs through an integrated approach. One of them is through this mangrove planting program. "In Ajkwa Estuary, we also have several programs. One of them is the Estuary Structure program, which is to build structures from Geotube and E-Groin from bamboo. The goal is to increase sediment deposition which can become a habitat for mangrove ecosystems. After the habitat is formed a Rhizophora mucronata mangrove is planted with a of 500 Ha per year." Sugio said.

PT Freeport Indonesia will continue to collaborate with various parties, including the Government, universities and communities in implementing environmental conservation programs in the Mimika Regency area, and are committed to continuing to provide support for efforts to maintain biodiversity in Papua in supporting sustainable environmental management efforts.
