The community of Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) Makassar held a CEO Talks event with the President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Tony Wenas at the Prof. Amiruddin Auditorium, Faculty of Medicine, Unhas, on Wednesday (9/13/2023).
The CEO Talks is part of the 67th Unhas Anniversary series of events, opened by the Rector of Hasanuddin University Prof. Dr. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc with approximately 700 students and Unhas teaching staff in attendance.
In his speech, Unhas Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., expressed his appreciation for Tony Wenas' presence to share his experiences and tips to be successfull. The Rector of Unhas believes the experiences shared by the President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia are motivations for Unhas students.
"We believe the leadership shared by Freeport's CEO and how to build this collaboration can be a motivation and build confidence for Unhas students, and we hope that this event can open work opportunities for students or alumni in Freeport and we welcome this as a good opportunity," said Prof. JJ, Rector of Unhas’s nickname.
In the discussion moderated by the Director of Student Affairs and Career Preparation Unhas, Abdullah Sanusi, S.E., MBA., Ph.D., Tony Wenas shared his experience and leadership strategy during his time as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in various companies while facing a dynamic era of change.
"The younger generation’s mindset must continue to develop to become a professional. A wide perspective will be beneficial to have a more strategic mindset," Tony said.
Tony revealed that his leadership experience in several multinational companies, including PTFI, involves interacting with multicultural teams with have diverse backgrounds.
In front of Unhas students and lecturers, Tony Wenas shared his tips to success. "A leader must have these four values, namely every leader must be able to instill the value of honesty in themselves and in others, is disciplined, focused, and sincerity in carrying out every job," said Tony.
Additionally, Tony Wenas shared information on the current Indonesian economic data and company activities in managing mining in Papua. In his presentation, Freeport can continue to operate due to the fact tht it is in line with carrying out operations and contributing to local and central governments, and also providing benefits directly to community surrounding the operation area.
Tony also shared his experience with Freeport Indonesia which currently applies the company's values, namely Safety, Integrity, Commitment, Respect, and Excellence otherwise known as “SINCERE” to all employees who are led in running the company's business.
"We heard interesting tips from today's event, we now know the necessity to have a good time management between focusing on work, hobbies, organization, to effective ways to relax and refresh from Freeport's CEO," said Muhammad Ridwan, a Faculty of Informatics students of Unhas. The CEO Talks event is expected to provide valuable insights for students that can lead them to become leaders in the era of change.
