President Jokowi Inaugurates PTFI Smelter First Copper Cathode Production

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurates the PT Freeport Indonesia Smelter first copper cathode production in Manyar, Gresik Regency, East Java on Monday, September 23, 2024.
Freeport-McMoran Chairman Richard C. Adkerson, Freeport-McMoran President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kathleen L. Quirk, and PT Freeport Indonesia President Director Tony Wenas were also present during the smelter’s inauguration.
After conducted a field inspection, Jokowi appreciated PTFI for its first copper cathode production that marks an important milestone in the national mining industry.
“After 30 months, thank God, we can inaugurate the PTFI Smelter. The Smelter is the foundation for Indonesia becoming a developed country, it marks the government's efforts to increase the added value of utilizing Indonesia's natural resources.” Jokowi said.
Tony Wenas in his speech, emphasized that the PTFI Smelter in Manyar, Gresik is a part of PTFI’s support for the down streaming of the mineral resource industry in Indonesia as well as it shows PTFI commitment to fulfilling on its special mining business permit.
“From the biggest Underground Mine in the world operated by PTFI in Papua, to the copper refining facility with the largest single-line design in the world owned by PTFI in Manyar Gresik, allows mineral resources to be fully managed from upstream to downstream domestically. This will provide added value for our beloved country,” Tony said.
PTFI Smelter has an input capacity of 1.7 million tons of copper concentrate and is expected to produce approximately 650,000 tons of copper cathodes annually. With a copper purity of 99.99%, this copper cathode product has met the standards as a raw material for final products.
The PTFI Smelter will also produce 50 tons of gold and 210 tons of silver. It began operations on June 27 and is projected to reach full capacity by December 2024.
