At PT Freeport Indonesia, we are working to improve investments in the mining sector and at the same time fulfill the company's commitment towards environmental stewardship as part of Good Mining Practice.

While the Grasberg reclamation process is ongoing per PTFI agreement with the Indonesian government that reflects our postmining responsibility, today, Wednesday (15/05) PT Freeport Indonesia commemorated the 2024 World Environment Day by planting 400 plants in Grasberg area. 

The session began with the employees and Mimika Regency Government’s representatives gathering at the Batu Bersih Grasberg Area. Hundreds of employees participate in this action.

In this occasion, Executive Vice President-Site Operations and Technical Mine Manager PTFI, Carl Tauran encourages all employees to remain focused on the continuation of the environmental preservation efforts. 

He also emphasized that PTFI support an environmentally responsible way of conducting its business.

“As we strive to achieve an advance investment in sustainable mining practices, we are equally committed to operating responsibly and mitigating adverse impacts on the natural environment,” Carl said.

Throughout a mine’s lifecycle, Carl added that the company engages in projects to recover and rehabilitate the area by working together with companys’ stakeholders – employees, community partners and government officials towards the implementation of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles.

Representing the Head of DLH (Dinas Lingkungan Hidup) Mimika, Section Head of PPLH (Penataan dan Penataan Lingkungan Hidup) Mimika, Thomas Hendro Sowe revealed that the Mimika Regency Government, would like to thank all parties in PTFI, especially Environmental Department for collaborating with the local government in order to support the environmental preservation in Mimika.

In the efforts to promote the growth of native species and create habitats for natural species, PTFI faces several challenges due to the climate at the subalpine elevation prevents the growth of several species used in this project. Resulted in limited types of natural grasses planted in this area.

Yohan Sunyoto, PTFI Manager-Environmental Waste Management Compliance explained, until 2023, 507 hectares of land have been reclaimed, spanning east to west.

“Grasbergs’ endemic grasses planting is one of the 2024 World environment Day’s series of event that aimed to encourage all PTFI employees and government officials to contribute on the environmental preservation efforts,” Yohan added.

Yohan revealed that his team have prepared 400 Grasberg endemic grasses at the Batu Bersih subalpine area with at an altitude of more than 14,000 feet above sea level, plant species identified and used in this event include; Rhododendron sp., Papuacalia titoi, Olearia lepidota, Coporosma brasii, Tasmania piperita.
