PTFI Donates Oxygen Concentrators to Help Mimika Hospitals

19 July 2021

PT Freeport Indonesia recently donated 20 units of oxygen concentrators to Mimika Regency General Hospital and Mitra Masyarakat Hospital to help with the increasing number of COVID-19 patients who need oxygen, with each of the two main hospitals in Timika receiving 10 units of the equipment.

The 20 oxygen concentrators cost nearly $70,000 and signify the company’s continuing commitment to keep employees and the surrounding community safe. Like many places in a country that has become the new epicenter of the pandemic, medical facilities in Mimika Regency have begun to experience difficulties in providing effective care for the influx of new patients.

Nathan Kum, Vice President-Community Development said the company will continue to support the government and local community in handling the spiralling pandemic.

”Oxygen is now needed more than ever, as we’re seeing its scarcity accross the country due to the severity of the new variant patients admitted at hospitals. We hope the donation could save more lives of Mimika residents,” Kum said.

"Everything that is being done is part of the company's commitment to take part in the prevention and handling of the COVID-19 crises in Mimika Regency,” Kum said. ”We also want to appeal to the public, especially PTFI employees, to always comply with the health protocols such as wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, washing hands, avoiding crowds and reducing mobility. We hope everyone remains strong and this health crisis will soon be over."

Dr. Joni Ribo Tandisau, Mitra Masyarakat Hospital Director, appreciates PTFI’s support.

"Oxygen is critical to treat COVID-19 patients, and we are currently short in supply. Mitra Masyarakat is only capable of producing 12 oxygen cylinders per day while the current daily need is 50 cylinders," Tandisau said.

In addition to providing assistance to hospitals in Timika, the company also added 10 units of additional oxygen concentrators at the Kuala Kencana Clinic.

An oxygen concentrator is used to give supplemental oxygen to patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), including patients with severe COVID-19 symptoms. Oxygen concentrators work by filtering surrounding air, compressing it to the required density and then delivering the purified medical-standard oxygen through a pulse-dose delivery system known as continuous-flow system to the patient. The equipment also has an electronic user interface that can adjust the oxygen concentration level and rate for the patient.
