SATP Road to Mainstage Broadway Jakarta, "Shining Together" with Papuan Children

16 July 2024

Timika - 20 students from Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua (SATP) boarding school participated in an activity for interactive personal development training titled "SATP Road to Mainstage Broadway Jakarta" at SP-4 Mimika on Thursday (28/2/2024).

"This activity is aimed to broaden children’s outlooks and mental horizons and encouraging them to dare to dream and achieve it," said the Head of SATP Boarding School, Yohana Tnunay.

She revealed that the children were very excited and actively involved during this full-day training. They were selected through an internal school selection process where each student showcased their talents and interests in various fields of art, including Dance, Acting, Vocal Group, Mellophone, Painting, Drumming, Poetry, and Modern Dance. A total of 86 students participated in the selection, from 4th grade elementary school to 8th grade junior high school (aged 10-15 years).

Meanwhile, Co-Founder & Program Director of Camp Broadway Indonesia, Adit Marciano, said that the "Shining Together" themed training was an interactive personal development workshop in three parts.

The first session was "Me, My Dreams, and My Guardian (Aku, Mimpi, dan Pelindungku)," the second session was "Me and My Talent (Aku dan Talentaku)," and the final session was "Me and My Reflections (Aku dan Refleksiku)," along with Laura Muljadi, an Art Instructor and Professional Model.

"I must not be discouraged in my endeavor to be of service to Papua and Indonesia," wrote Monsela Janampa, a 6E grade student, on a star-shaped card during the "Me, My Dreams, and My Guardian" session. This session encouraged the children to write down their aspirations and motivations for their daily lives.

"I want to be a Miner, to follow in my father’s footsteps in Tembagapura," wrote Evarella Hanau, an 8E grade student, on her star-shaped paper. The session is expected to encourage children to chase their dreams without giving up, symbolized by the stars they created.

The second session, "Me and My Talent," was an interactive game that gives children the opportunity to learn basic theater arts, including character portrayal through sentences, expressiveness through movement and facial expressions, as well as harmony in dance movements.

In the "Me and My Reflections" session, children expressed their feelings about the training sessions and learned about success, failure, and difficulties as part of the journey towards achieving their dreams.

Camp Broadway Indonesia (CBI) is a training platform for children and teenagers in singing, dancing, and acting, presented as musical theater. CBI is the only official institution in Indonesia with a license from Camp Broadway New York.

"In June, Camp Broadway Indonesia will be holding a six-day Mainstage Broadway Jakarta, where the children will be coached on dancing, singing, acting, and perform onstage for the public at the end of the training. Our visit to SATP is to scout for young talents who will attend the coaching camp in Jakarta," said Adit.

Senior Vice President of Community Development PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), Nathan Kum, said, SATP is part of the social investment that has become commitment of PTFI to the young generation of Papua.

"In the process of running its mining business, PTFI consistently addresses the development of the Amungme, Kamoro, and the five indigenous communities living around the company's operational area, as well as other Papuans. Providing uality and pricipled education for Papuan children is a priority," said Nathan.

In addition to education, PTFI's social investments cover community empowerment, preservation of arts and culture, development of young Papuan talents in sports, infrastructure development, health, and the economy.

SATP is a dormitory-based school owned by the Amugme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK), managed by the Lokon Education Foundation (YPL) Timika Representative. This year, 1,116 students are studying at SATP, comprising 834 elementary students and 282 junior high students.

SATP develops the Merdeka Curriculum, derived from life-based contextual education in Papua. In the learning process, SATP refers to the National Curriculum, developed by considering local wisdom values in the form of life-based contextual curriculum in Papua.

YPMAK manages partnership funds from PT Freeport Indonesia for community development. YPMAK's programs are focused on the development and empowerment of the Amungme and Kamoro communities, as well as the five indigenous tribes (Dani, Damal, Moni, Mee, and Nduga) in Mimika Regency, particularly covering social, humanitarian, and religious fields.

Yohana hopes that by participating in the Mainstage Broadway Jakarta, SATP children will have a great opportunity to develop their potential in Theatre arts, boost their confidence and talent, meet new friends from various regions, and perform in theatre productions.
