The Ministry of Environment & Forestry (KLHK) Team and the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Team paid a working visit to PT Freeport Indonesia working area on Saturday-Monday (February 3 to 5, 2024).

"This visit aimed to take a close look at environmental management efforts in mining areas, as well as to review various community empowerment programs that have been carried out by PTFI," PTFI-Vice President Director Jenpino Ngabdi said.

Also present was the Bappenas Team led by Deputy for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources Vivi Yulaswati and the KLHK Team led by Secretary of the Director General of Forestry Planning and Environmental Management Herban Hendrayana.

To take a closer look at environmental management efforts in the PTFI mining area, the group visited the Bunaken Overlook area at an altitude of 4285 meters above sea level (masl), the Batu Bersih area at an altitude of 4300 masl, and the Napuan Overlook area.

"Mine Reclamation is our obligation in order to carry out sustainable mining in the PTFI working area," he added.

Reclamation efforts are also being carried out in the coastal area, namely Muara Ajkwa, by planting mangroves so that they can provide added value to the environment and society.

The team also monitored the reclamation area in the mile post 21 area and looked at the tailings utilization for agriculture, plantations, livestock and fisheries. Tailings is the left-over materials from the processing of mined ore.

Deputy for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources - Bappenas, Vivi Yulaswati, said that PTFI continues to set a good example in tailings utilization.

"I believe Freeport can be a role model for sustainable mining. Sustainable is not only green, but also ESG (Environmental, Social, & Governance). And if all of those are balanced, then Freeport leading as sustainable mining is very inspiring in my opinion. Indonesia needs that, globally needs that," Vivi said.

The Directorate General of Forestry Planning and Environmental Management Team says that PTFI has made various efforts in environmental management, and hopes that this will be continued and improved.

At the Grasberg reclamation area, the team planted Deschampsia klossii, an endemic grass that grows in Grasberg. Planting was carried out in the Batu Clean Grasberg area, at an altitude of 4300 meters above sea level.

The team also visited a number of PTFI social investment projects including the Papua Taruna Boarding School, Mitra Masyarakat Hospital, Mimika Sport Complex, and the Maria Bintang Laut Cooperative in the Timika city area.(*)
