Town Cleanup in Tembagapura to Commemorate the 2024 World Environment Day
26 June 2024
Tembagapura - To commemorate the 2024 World Environment Day, PT Freeport Indonesia held the town cleanup action in Tembagapura on Saturday (22/06/2024). This action involved hundreds of participants, including employees, regional associations, religious communities and employees' families & relatives.
The town cleanup began with morning gymnastics at the Tembagapura Soccer field, then continued to town cleanup, and ended with the distribution of doorprizes.
Gesang Setyadi, PTFI- Vice President Environmental, in his speech emphasized that the town cleanup action is not only about picking up trash, but also as an effort to trigger public concern and awareness, especially the community living in Tembagapura and its surroundings.
"In this 2024 World Environment Day commemoration, the whole world will come together to focus on three abandoned environmental conditions, such as; land degradation, desertification, and drought. We can all contribute to get involved in managing environmental issues through a small and simple step, by being responsible for the waste we produce. For example, by implementing the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and inviting people around us to reduce plastic consumption," Gesang explained.
The government has launched a Clean Indonesia from Waste by 2025 as stated in Presidential Regulation No. 97/2017. The document contains efforts and strategies that need to be carried out to reduce 30% of waste from its source and manage at least 70% of waste so that it does not end up in landfills. In line with these regulations, the Central Papua Provincial Government also issued Central Papua Governor Regulation No. 22/2023 concerning Regional Policies and Strategies (Jakstrada) on the Domestic Waste and Domestic Similar Waste Management.
PTFI continues to take the initiative to manage waste, both within the operational area and outside the company's area. Since 2021, the Environment Division has produced eco paving blocks from bottled drinking water waste and other plastic waste (PTE, HDPE, and ABS). The plastic bottles obtained during the Tembagapura town cleanup will later be used as raw materials for making eco paving blocks. Meanwhile, the abundant aluminum waste in the company area is also reused to be used as helmet souvenirs.
Not only recycle process, PTFI efforts to reduce the waste also marked by the launch of the #SaPuAir program in 2019. This program encourages the water consumption through the water drinking station using owned water bottles and increases the provision of water drinking station facilities in the company's areas. Since its launch, more than 50 natural water sources in the company’s areas have been treated into clean and decent drinking water for employees. PTFI has also restricted the use of plastic bags in shopping facilities throughout the company’s areas.
"PTFI is committed to implementing good mining practices, as well as implementing sustainable social and environmental investments," Gesang said in his closing remarks.
