U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Tours Grasberg Operations
27 September 2018
A recent visit to Grasberg operations by U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Joseph R. Donovan had the official stating how impressed he was with the great work happening there.
“I’m deeply impressed with both the scope and the complexity of the effort here,” Donovan said. “People are doing really excellent work to keep this mine operating and growing. I’m also very impressed with the use of advanced technology to facilitate mining operations.”
Donovan, a career diplomat in mostly Asian countries, toured Jobsite September 22-24. While he had spent several years reading about Grasberg, he wanted a first-hand perspective and better understanding of PT Freeport Indonesia’s mining operations in Papua.
During his visit, Donovan toured the main operations areas – including the Grasberg open pit, underground mine and mill – and met with employees to learn about the technical aspects of mining. He also toured support facilities, including the Nemangkawi Taining Institute and MP 21 Reclamation and Biodiversity Center, as well as community facilities, such as the Mitra Masyarakat Hospital and Mimika Sports Complex.
As if that weren’t enough activity, Donovan attended a special dinner with U.S. expatriates and their spouses at the Lupa Lelah Club. (Sularso)
