YPJ Elementary School Students Shows Environmental Concern and the Spirit of the Golden Generation
MIMIKA - Elementary school students from the Jayawijaya Education Foundation (YPJ) demonstrated their environmental awareness and role as agents of change through the Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition held in Kuala Kencana and Tembagapura in April 2026. This activity culminated in the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum for sixth-grade students, encouraging them to examine real-world issues and develop relevant solutions.
In Kuala Kencana, the PYP Exhibition, titled "Growing Hope," was officially opened on Wednesday (April 22, 2026) by Claus Wamafma, Director & EVP of Sustainable Development, at the YPJ Kuala Kencana Sporthall in collaboration with the Environmental Division in commemoration of International Earth Day.
This activity received praise from the Mimika Regency Education Office. Andri Patiung, Head of the Elementary School Division of the Mimika Education Office, assessed that the activity successfully instilled environmental awareness from an early age. "This is truly extraordinary. The children not only learn theory, but also get hands-on experience studying environmental issues and finding solutions," he said.
Meanwhile, in Tembagapura, the IB-PYP Exhibition on Thursday (April 23, 2026) was opened by Eman Widijanto, VP of Mining Safety, at the Tembagapura Community Hall. In Tembagapura, the theme "Golden" was chosen directly by the students to reflect their hopes of becoming the next golden generation. In this activity, students worked collaboratively, conducting research, interviewing speakers, and presenting solutions to various social and environmental issues of their choosing.
The principal of YPJ Tembagapura Elementary School, Maria Easter Lusiana, explained that this exhibition served as a means of actualizing six years of learning. "The children are challenged to apply knowledge, skills, and actions in their daily lives. They are agents of change in the world," she said. Despite the challenges of limited access to learning in remote areas, innovations such as virtual field trips and the utilization of the surrounding environment continue to be optimized.
In addition to improving research and communication skills, the PYP Exhibition is also part of the assessment system that fosters IB student character traits, such as curiosity, compassion, critical thinking, and a collaborative and principled attitude. Parental support is also a crucial factor in the success of this activity. "As parents, we play a supportive role. The process is long and challenging, but the work is done entirely by the children. We are very proud," said Meta, one of the parents.
Through the PYP Exhibition in Kuala Kencana and Tembagapura, YPJ Elementary School emphasized its commitment to providing a holistic education that equips students with social awareness.
