Virtual Wellness Program Events: Staying Active and Healthy During a Pandemic

28 December 2020

The pandemic has impacted  most aspects of our lives, including the way we exercise to maintain our health. While gyms and outdoor activities remain restricted, the company’s virtual sport events have helped employees stay active and healthy.

The Virtual Sports Competition, held from October 1 through November 30, encouraged employees to stay fit and have fun as part of the company’s existing Wellness Program.

More than 243 employees from all areas – Highlands, Lowlands and Jakarta – took part in walking, running and cycling, all while meeting the pandemic restrictions limiting in-person contact.

During the two months, they have been judged based on the total exercise time and the consistency for each activity during the competition. They also joinded the Virtual Sport Experience challenge. The Compensation and Benefits Department collaborated with International SOS and the Learning and Organizational Development Department’s SINCERE team to develop this engaging exercise program that incorporates the company’s core values. It is challenged the employees to upload photos / videos on the Instagram with the hashtags: #virtualsportSINCERE2020 and #freeportindonesia.

Staying Active Together, Virtually

Outdoor activities can be quite a challenge for Highlanders due to ever-changing weather conditions and heavy rainfall. As the competition moved online, this year’s wellness program also provided an alternative when the weather was not cooperative for outdoor activities as well as the opportunity to incorporate SINCERE values in the program. Is a right time to implement the corporate values to committed to ourself to be disciplined in maintaining good health habits.

“I think staying healthy and maintaining your wellness is a good embodiment of applying the company’s values in our day-to-day life,” said Mariani Adelaide Tobing, an outdoor enthusiast from the Learning and Organizational Development Department.

Change It Up

With gyms and other public spaces closed at Jobsite, it can be hard to establish — much less commit to — a physical exercise routine.

But consistency is the key to achieving successful changes, and the virtual competition was one way to build healthy habits in a changing world, said Nikodemus Purba, Vice President-Compensation and Benefits Management.

“Even though we may feel fear during the pandemic, we also can feel reward and gain a  lasting benefit from a new routine and consistent self-motivation,” he said.

While the company considers employees’ health and medical benefits as one of its top priorities, good health also requires employees’ commitment and responsibility to achieve good results, he said.

“We appreciate the participation and awareness that resulted from the program. Even though the competition has ended, let's continue to live and to spread a lifestyle of wellness and good habits. Congratulations on everyone’s achievement, and we look forward to your participation in the next PTFI wellness program competition,” Nikodemus said.
