"The Compost Houses we are establishing are located in Manyar Sidorukun Village, Manyarejo Village, and Manyar Sidomukti Village. The purpose is to process household waste and empower communities through a circular economy approach," said VP Business Process Smelting & Refining PTFI Aripin Buman in Gresik, Thursday.

Aripin also explained that the Compost Houses were established in three villages that are part of PTFI's priority villages around the PTFI Smelter operational area. This facility addresses the needs of residents in these three villages for organic waste management to reduce the volume of waste disposed of at Final Disposal Sites (TPA). The waste is then processed into compost fertilizer that benefits agriculture and reforestation.

"We hope this program can increase awareness and community participation in responsible waste management, while promoting circular economy practices by utilizing waste as a resource with economic value," he said.

Village Head of Manyar Sidomukti Ach Chasin expressed his appreciation to PTFI. "We greatly appreciate Freeport's support in building the Compost House in our village. This program is very beneficial because it can address waste problems while providing opportunities for residents to earn additional income. We hope activities like this can continue and bring long-term benefits to the community," said Chasin.

The Waste for Waste program is a concrete implementation of the circular economy concept, where funding for Compost House construction comes from the management and sale of PTFI Smelter construction waste managed by PTFI's social partner, Pusat Transformasi Bersama (PTB). The funds obtained are then reallocated to build waste management infrastructure in nine beneficiary villages.

As a form of community empowerment, each village formed Community Self-Help Groups (KSM) to operate the Compost Houses: KSM SABAR in Manyar Sidorukun Village, KSM Mukti Survive Compost in Manyar Sidomukti Village, and KSM MAKIN GEMES in Manyarejo Village. These three KSMs receive assistance from Wahana Edukasi Harapan Alam Semesta (Wehasta), which is PTFI's implementing partner in supporting community capacity building and program sustainability.

Wehasta has conducted assessments according to the needs of each village around the PTFI Smelter operational area to ensure an appropriate and targeted approach. In addition to the Compost Houses in three villages in Manyar District, the next waste management programs include Waste Banks in three villages in Mengare and Karangrejo Village, as well as the construction of Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Waste Processing Facilities (TPS3R) in Banyuwangi Village and Bedanten Village.

Through collaboration between companies, communities, and local partners, this program is expected to become a concrete example of sustainable waste management that can be replicated in other areas. PTFI remains committed to promoting environmental initiatives that provide positive and sustainable impact, in line with corporate social responsibility principles.

To begin construction of the Compost Houses and commemorate World Environment Day 2025, PTFI held thanksgiving ceremonies in all three villages attended by village officials and community representatives. The Compost Houses are targeted to be completed and ready for operation by July 2025.
