Freeport Indonesia Employees Clean Up Trash on Carstensz Hiking Trail

29 July 2025

Timika, July 29, 2025 - PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) employees worked together to clean up trash scattered in the Merren Valley Carstensz Basecamp area, which is a climbing route to the Carstensz Glacier and Pyramid Peak, Central Papua.

"Initially, the PTFI team and the Lorentz National Park Center team identified piles of garbage left behind by old climbers. We then conducted several waste cleanup actions and collected them in 76 sacks or around 600 kilograms of waste during June-July 2025. This waste was then brought down to Tembagapura by helicopter," said PTFI Senior Vice President of Geoengineering & Environmental Ardhin Yuniar.

Lorentz National Park is located to the east, adjacent to PTFI's Special Mining Business License Area (IUPK) and is one of the alternative routes for climbers to Carstensz Glacier and Pyramid Peak.

"This is not just a cleaning activity, this is a manifestation of PTFI's commitment along with all employees and parties involved to realize environmental sustainability by caring for and protecting our earth," Ardhin said.

Head of Lorentz National Park Manuel Mirino expressed his appreciation to PTFI employees who cleaned up trash along the Carstensz Peak hiking trail. The cleanup is a collaboration and synergy between Lorentz National Park and PTFI to improve the effectiveness of Lorentz National Park management.

"Since 2022, a joint team of Lorentz National Park Center and PTFI have collaborated to engage in several waste cleanup actions in Carstensz. Finally, on this occasion, all the waste was brought down with the support of PTFI," he said.

Ardhin explained that 15 PTFI employees started their journey from the Zebra Wall to the southeast for 3.5 kilometers to the Merren Valley Carstensz Basecamp. They had to walk up steep inclines and extreme terrain for 3 hours during high rain intensity while picking up hikers' garbage.

"After all the garbage was collected, we made a helicopter landing scenario in the Merren Valley Carstensz basecamp area which is at an altitude of 4,330 meters above sea level. Then the waste was transported to Mile Post 66 Helipad, Tembagapura District at an altitude of 2,394 meters above sea level," said Ardhin.

The 600 kilograms of hikers' waste collected was then managed by stockpiling, leveling, and compacting to reduce the potential environmental disturbances caused.
