58 Years of Freeport Indonesia, the World's Largest Fully Integrated Copper Mining Company
Tembagapura, April 8, 2025 - President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), Tony Wenas, stated that the company’s 58th anniversary is the perfect moment to reinforce its commitment as the largest fully integrated upstream-downstream copper mining company in the world.
“Freeport has been mining in Papua for more than five decades. And now, with the development of the second smelter in Gresik and the start of gold bar production at the Precious Metal Refinery (PMR), PTFI has become the world's largest fully integrated copper mining company,” said Tony during the Peak Night of the 58th Anniversary of PTFI at the Sporthall in Tembagapura, Mimika, Central Papua, on Monday (April 7).

He said that throughout its operations in Indonesia, PTFI has grown into a strong company because all employees work together while upholding the company values of SINCERE (Safety, Integrity, Commitment, Respect, Excellence). “We can overcome all challenges not because of my greatness, not because of each of us individually, but because of our collective hard work, hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder, with good coordination and mutual respect as one family, the Freeport Family, whether in Tembagapura, Kuala Kencana, Gresik, or Jakarta,” Tony said.
The peak celebration of PTFI’s anniversary carried the theme “Integrated Upstream-Downstream Mining,” and was attended by PTFI President Director Tony Wenas, PTFI Technical Mine Manager Carl Tauran, PTFI Commissioners Hinsa Siburian, Adrianto Machribie, A.M. Fachir, senior management, and employees. The theme highlights the company’s crucial role in building a downstream foundation that creates added value, brings positive impact to society, and continues contributing to Indonesia.
On the same occasion, President Director of MIND ID, Maroef Sjamsoeddin, conveyed that PTFI has made a significant contribution to the nation's economic development. “The integrated mining operations have proven that Indonesia’s minerals can be optimally managed to generate added value through various strategic projects,” said Maroef in a video message.
Maroef added that PTFI is capable of meeting industrialization needs, with every step and achievement aligning with sustainable mining governance as envisioned in the government’s "Golden Indonesia 2045" vision. “Thanks also to all Freeporters for their tireless achievements and fighting spirit in building the future. Keep being a world-class mining company that brings benefits to our beloved homeland,” said Maroef.
The peak celebration of PTFI’s 58th anniversary was enlivened with musical performances and followed by a dance show by employees. In addition to the celebration in Tembagapura, the Smelter in Gresik also held a celebration, which included a halal bihalal gathering and a special moment where management served food directly to employees at the PTFI Smelter cafeteria. The event was attended by more than 500 employees and contractors.
The company has faced many challenges, yet the values instilled since PTFI's early operations have continued to endure, becoming a core strength of the company. The diversity within PTFI, stretching from Sabang to Merauke, enables the company to keep operating and contributing to the nation.
Tony encouraged employees to continue managing the world-class mining operation responsibly to achieve safe and sustainable production. “From Our Home, We Are One, Creating for Indonesia through the world’s largest fully integrated upstream-downstream copper mining,” said Tony.
In 2024, PTFI recorded a copper production of 1.8 billion pounds and 1.86 million ounces of gold. From that production, PTFI contributed a record-high amount to the country, reaching IDR 80 trillion, with contributions to the Central Papua Provincial Government, Mimika Regency, and other districts in Central Papua totaling IDR 10 trillion.
