Community Rallies for a Cleaner City and Greener Future

28 April 2025

Timika, April 26, 2025 — In a powerful show of environmental responsibility, the Environment Department of PT Freeport Indonesia led a city-wide “Brighter Earth, Brighter Future” campaign to promote awareness on maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment. The event brought together more than 100 participants, including employees; communities in Timika such as Church Youth, Alam Lestari, and Suroboyo Community Timika; campus groups; and local residents, who united to clean public areas and promote sustainable lifestyles.

The event focused on cleaning up the public areas, specifically in front of the BMKG Timika office and along the yellow fence area, as well as education about waste management, recycling, and the impact of pollution on health and biodiversity.

"Earth Day is not just an annual commemoration, but a moment for reflection and real action on our relationship with nature," said Thomas Owe, Head of Arrangement and Compliance of the Environmental Agency. "We at the Environmental Agency are committed to working together with the community, schools, and various other stakeholders to create a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment," he continued.

The day began with a safety briefing, joint exercise, and distribution of cleanup kits, followed by group clean-up efforts.

This marks the first step toward one of the event’s main goals to recruit at least 150 additional community members to join the upcoming cleanup and sustainability program led by the Department of Environment.

If we can work together, the future of our Earth will be bright and healthy," said Tumpal Sinaga, General Superintendent of the Environment Division. "We hope the spirit of this activity will spread to those around us, encouraging habits such as proper waste management," he added.

Separating waste for recycling, reducing plastic use, and composting food scraps are easy habits that make a big impact. Turning off unused lights, using water wisely, and bringing reusable bags when shopping are small steps that support a cleaner planet.

Together, let's contribute to a healthier environment by making every street, river, and park a reflection of our care for nature, because a clean city is a shared responsibility.

"Through this cleanup action, we are reminded that the Earth is not an inheritance from our ancestors, but a trust for our children and grandchildren. It is our responsibility to protect, nurture, and ensure its sustainability," said Thomas.
