Freeport Indonesia Celebrates Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day with Nayaro Village

Timika, August 15 2024 - PT Freeport Indonesia, together with local community and the Mimika Regional Government, held a community service event in Nayaro Village, Mimika Baru District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province, on August 13–14. 

“This event reflects our collective joy in celebrating Indonesia's Independence Day with local community, so that the festivities at PTFI can also be felt by the people of Nayaro, fostering a growing love for the nation,” said Daniel Perwira, Chairman of the 79th Independence Day Committee of PTFI Lowland.  

He emphasized that Freeport Indonesia remains committed to carrying out community development in the areas of education, health, and economy, through collaboration with communities near the mining operations area and the Mimika Regency government. "This community service is a form of the company’s caring for the community, as the Nayaro community is a strategic partner. Their continuous support allows PTFI to coexist peacefully with the community," Daniel added. 

The first day of the community service event (August 13) included various activities such as a village clean-up, installation of pennants and banners with the national flag colors, setting up a portal at the village entrance gate, football training, and the distribution of 87 pairs of shoes to the children. The day concluded with sharing lunch with 600 residents of Nayaro Village.

On the second day (August 14), the Nayaro community were provided with edification by National Narcotics Agency (BNN) on the dangers posed by narcotics and alcoholic beverages, heard and watched the health promotion on the proper way to brush teeth, and were distributed packages containing personal hygiene items and toiletries. The activities continued with various Independence Day competitions, including a cracker-eating contest, sack races, marble races, and a ball-carrying relay races, with enthusiastic participation from children, teens, and adults alike. The event ended with a traditional Seka Dance and sharing lunch with 700 Nayaro Village residents.  

“We are grateful to Freeport for holding festivities to celebrate 79th Indonesia Independence Day with the people of our village. I witnessed how children and all villagers participated mirthfully and joyfully," said Nayaro Village Head, Konstantin Tumuka. 

Daniel expressed his gratitude to the people of Nayaro Village for their enthusiasm in participating in Indonesia Independence Day celebrations. “Let us maintain the unity we have built, so that we can continue working together to build and improve this village,” Daniel concluded.
