Freeport Supporting Central Papua Province Participation in PON XXI Aceh-Sumut 2024

Aceh, 8 September 2024 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is supporting Central Papua Province’s participation in the 21st National Games Week 2024 (Pekan Olah Raga Nasional [PON] XXI Aceh-Sumut 2024) taking place in Aceh – North Sumatra and has congratulated Central Papua Muay Thai athletes and coaches for their successfully winning three medals.

Fitria Juwita and Ayu Shakira contributed silver medals in the Women’s Muay Boran martial arts number. Meanwhile, Fitria Juwita, Hulda Elisabeth Sroyer, and Prisillia Yuliana Sahelangi won the silver medal for the Women’s Muay Aerobic martial arts number. Bronze medals were won by Roger Palungan, Alinus Waker, and Marsel O. Lagiaduay for the Men’s Muay Aerobic martial arts number. The competitions took place in Aceh on 5 – 6 September.

“Our congratulations to the athletes and coaches. Central Papua Muay Thai athletes winning medals is making Papua proud and inspires us all. Hopefully, their hard work, diligence and persistence, and outstanding fighting spirit will continue to inspire other Central Papua athletes who are competing in PON XXI Aceh-Sumut 2024,” PTFI Director & EVP, Sustainable Development & Community Relations, Claus Wamafma uttered.

Claus said Freeport Indonesia is deeply proud to be supporting the Central Papua contingent’s participation in the 21st PON taking place in Aceh, North Sumatra in 2024. This support includes transportation facilitation for all athletes participating in all sports numbers, and provision of accommodations for athletes and officials throughout the event.

“Freeport Indonesia will continue to offer full support for development of sports in Papua. We are optimistic there will be even more achievements made by Central Papua athletes during PON XXI Aceh-Sumut 2024,” he said.

Central Papua Province KONI (Indonesia National Sports Committee) First Chairman Cessar Avianto expressed pride over the achievements made by the Muay Thai athletes and thanked PT Freeport Indonesia for the support provided.

“The earning of medals by Central Papua’s Muay Thai athletes to date in PON XXI is inspiriting and energizing the entire Central Papua contingent. We expect all our athletes participating in other sports numbers will be motivated with a fighting spirit to do their best to bring glory and honor to Papua. Thank you, PT Freeport Indonesia, for being our partner in advancing sports in Papua,” Cesar stated.

Central Papua Province KONI dispatched 53 athletes taking part in 14 sports numbers in PON XXI Aceh-Sumut 2024. The athletes underwent training both independently and in Training Centers. The Central Papua team is competing in 14 sports events, including Paragliding, Aero Modelling, Track and Field, Bodybuilding, Chess, and the martial arts of Pencak Silat, Jujitsu, Taekwondo and Muaythai, as well as Climbing, Rugby, Paramotor, and Boxing.
