On President Jokowi’s agenda while visiting Tembagapura was to inaugurate the company’s 5G mining technology. The technological advancement is a collaboration between PT Freeport Indonesia and PT Telekomunikasi Seluler and is expected to enhance the company’s safety and productivity.
“Today, we reached a significant milestone by applying the first 5G smart mining technology in Southeast Asia, thanks to the collaboration between PT Freeport Indonesia and PT Telekomunikasi Seluler,” Jokowi said.
Tony Wenas, PTFI’s President Director, explained that while the 5G technology might be groundbreaking in the region, due to its naturally challenging and complex operations, PTFI have developed autonomous technology since 2006. With PTFI now fully producing from its underground mines, the operations require sophisticated technology more than ever to deliver safe production. Combined with avant-garde engineering features, the technological enhancement is expected to control the associated underground mining risks and hazards.
“The 5G technology innovations will enable us to monitor and prevent accidents by optimizing the use of Artificial Intelligence,” Wenas said. “Our underground operations pose a high degree of danger for workers and assets. Thus, we need careful planning, apply appropriate technology, empower and protect our workforce.”
