02 September 2022

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, recently visited PT Freeport Indonesia Jobsite area in Tembagapura, Mimika Regency, Papua.

During his two-day visit, Jokowi toured the site and visited several operations areas, including the open pit mine, the underground remote equipment control room, the Deep Mill Level Zone mine and the Grasberg Block Cave’s automated rail haulage system. For Jokowi, the comprehensive visit gave him first-hand exposure to the operations’ complexities, challenges and wonder.

“This is an extraordinary operation. I could only imagine how complicated it was to build a mining project in such a remote and geographically challenging environment. But you did it. And it sustains,” Jokowi said.

Widodo also acknowledged the employees’ resilience and hard work and expressed his pride in knowing that most PTFI workers are Indonesians.

“This is a significant mining operation; it is even one of the largest underground mines in the world. I’m proud to know that the mine is run by talented sons and daughters of our nation, especially Papuans.”

Joining Widodo on the visit were Erick Thohir, Minister of State-owned Enterprise; Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Investment and Head of Investment Coordinating Board and Pramono Anung, the cabinet secretary.
