Spreading Compassion Through Qurban: PTFI Employees in Harmony during Eid al-Adha

12 June 2025

The celebration of Eid al-Adha 1446 H, which fell on Friday, June 6, was a meaningful moment for PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) employees across all operational areas. Amid the diversity of work locations, the spirit of sacrifice (qurban) became a tangible symbol of worship, compassion, and unity within the PTFI family.

Tembagapura and Kuala Kencana

At the Jobsite area, both in the Highlands (Tembagapura) and the Lowlands (Kuala Kencana), Muslims PTFI employees and their families performed the Eid al-Adha Prayer simultaneously on a bright morning. In Tembagapura, the prayer was held at the soccer field, while in Kuala Kencana it was centralized at Baiturrahim Mosque.

The qurban charity program was initiated by the Freeport Indonesia Muslim Community Foundation (YMM), with active participation from over 153 Muslim employees and contractors as shohibul qurban (those offering  the  sacrifice),  who  collectively constributed 22 cows -- exceeding the initial target.

The selection of sacrificial animals was conducted professionally through a tender process that considered legal compliance, animal health, and the quality of the slaughter facilities. The slaughtering and distribution process took place in Mapurjaya, Mimika, in collaboration with selected local supplier, UD Gibran Indo.

The distribution reached approximately 2.600 beneficiaries, prioritizing the underprivileged and low-income communities in Timika, as well as several affiliated foundations and Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). The implementation  involved  38  committee members and volunteers, including PTFI employees, religious leaders, and local community volunteers. The entire process adhered to Islamic principles, was safe, and effectively targeted.

“On behalf of the foundation and organizing committee, we extend our deepest gratitude to all PTFI employees and contractors who participated and supported this event. As a real expression of PTFI’s commitment to the company’s core value of Respect, this program also serves as a way to strengthen our faith and piety to Allah SWT, while encouraging meaningful and sustainable contributions to the surrounding communities,” said Chairman of YMM Freeport Indonesia, Furjiyanto.

PTFI’s Smelter

At PTFI’s smelter in Gresik, 13 cows were distributed to the surrounding communities through 13 distribution points, reaching nine villages and four Islamic boarding schools in the Manyar and Bungah sub-districts. This annual initiative is part of the company’s ongoing social responsibility commitment.

Aripin Buman, Vice President of Business Process Smelting & Refining at PTFI, emphasized that this charity program reflects the humanitarian values the company upholds. “Eid al-Adha is a moment for sharing. This initiative represents the company’s concern for the surrounding communities and is part of our effort to strengthen our relationships with them. We hope this contribution brings benefit and joy to the recipients,” he said.

Local religious figure, KH. Moh. Zainur Rosyid from Al Ibrohimi Islamic Boarding School,  also  expressed appreciation  for PTFI’s contribution. “The Qurban is a symbol of sincerity and compassion. We are grateful that Freeport brings these values to life among the community. May this support become an ongoing charitable deed (amal jariyah) and strengthen the bond between the company and the local people, and may this positive relationship continue forward,” he stated.

Through the active involvement of employees from various divisions and work areas, PTFI demonstrates that behind the dynamic operations of the mining industry, the values of Respect, social responsibility, and community-driven growth are lived out and being put into real action.
