Timika, May 12, 2026 – Eight young indigenous Papuans (OAP) from Kampung Ayuka and Kampung Tipuka in the coastal area of Mimika Regency have graduated from the inaugural batch of the Nemangkawi Mining Institute (IPN) Apprentice Hospitality Program, and are now ready to enter the hotel and hospitality industry.

"We now have a new hope after learning how to deliver professional service — something we had never experienced before in the hospitality field. I feel far more confident entering the workforce in the hospitality industry," said trainee participant Lukas Taote at the IPN Multipurpose Hall, LIP Kuala Kencana, Timika, on Monday, April 27, 2026.

He said that over the 3.5-month training period, participants learned the skills, knowledge, and conduct needed to provide friendly and professional service to customers. They also learned how to improve the technical skills of hotel service staff, camp attendants, and mess attendants in the hospitality industry in Timika.

PTFI Senior Vice President of Community Relations Nathan Kum said PTFI continues to work to build the capacity of the younger generation of Papuans, particularly those residing in communities around the company's operational area. For this inaugural batch, participants came from the Ayuka–Tipuka village area near the Portsite and Cargodock zones.

"This program is part of efforts to develop human resource capacity among Papua communities around Freeport's operational area. Coastal youth are now preparing for the second training batch, and all of it is free of charge. They come, learn, do field practice, and emerge work-ready," said Nathan.

The Head of Kampung Tipuka, Paulus Polce Muka, expressed appreciation for the training program and pride in the achievement of the eight young people from his village. "Thank you for the intensive training and the trust placed in our children. We hope they grow more confident, secure employment, and continue to receive support so they can achieve success," said Paulus.

He also hoped that youth along the Mimika coast would make the most of this training so they can work professionally in sectors beyond the mining industry.

IPN is a vocational training institution established by PT Freeport Indonesia. It forms part of the company's social investment to improve the skills of local workers so they are more competitive and work-ready. IPN offers two training streams: Non-Technical Training and Technical Training.

Technical Training programs include Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Welding, Electrician, Factory Mechanics, Plant Operator, Heavy Equipment Operator, and Underground Mine Worker. Non-Technical Training — launched in 2026 — includes the Hospitality Training program, which focuses on developing service skills to support hotel, catering, and accommodation facility operations, particularly within the company environment and its supporting industries.
