Encouraging Sustainability in the Mining Sector, Freeport Indonesia Wins 2 Subroto Awards 2024
11 October 2024
PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) won the 2024 Subroto Award from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) for the company's commitment and performance in implementing sustainable mining governance and positive contributions to society.
PTFI received awards in two categories. First, the Safety, Engineering and Environmental Protection Category. Second, the Most Innovative Mineral Community Development and Empowerment Performance (PPM) category. President Joko Widodo witnessed the presentation of awards delivered by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia to 68 recipients in Jakarta, Thursday (10/10).
"It is an honor for us to win two 2024 Subroto Awards. This achievement is part of Freeport Indonesia's commitment to continue carrying out sustainable operations by prioritizing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles in carrying out mining activities," said the Director & Executive Vice President Sustainable Development PTFI Claus Wamafma after receiving the award.
He said that in applying ESG principles to social and environmental aspects, PTFI is committed to reducing carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030 through operating electric trains in underground mines and planting 100 hectares of mangroves per year.
"Every year we make direct social investments into the Papuan people by carrying out development and empowerment programs for indigenous people from seven tribes in Mimika using a partnership pattern," said Claus.
He added, PTFI built a Clean Water Treatment Facility to support the people of Timika City in getting access to affordable clean water, so that it could improve the quality of life of Timika City residents. In the economic sector, PTFI also fosters around 200 MSMEs in Papua.
Meanwhile, The Technical Mine Manager Carl Tauran said that the 2024 Subroto Awards in Safety, Engineering and Environmental Protection category further strengthened the commitment to implementing safe mining practices.
"In the world of mining, the safety aspect is the main thing. At Freeport Indonesia we have made a policy of implementing vehicle operation monitoring through telematics-based monitoring devices on vehicles in real time, and forming a special team to monitor the effectiveness of vehicle operations while promoting changes in driving behavior," Carl said.
This effort, he continued, is useful for protecting drivers and passengers from the risk of accidents, increasing operational efficiency through reducing accident rates and vehicle downtime. It is known that PTFI has a fleet of more than 2,000 vehicles operating in the PTFI mining area consisting of light vehicles, buses, trucks and other heavy equipment. The average number of employees using transport vehicles from the lowlands to the highlands or vice versa in 2023 will be 1,871 passengers per day and will increase in 2024 by 1,960 passengers per day. This makes it clear that driving behavior is one of the main contributors to the risk of vehicle accidents.
"As part of the implementation of the Fatal Risk Management (FRM) program in 2017, PTFI implemented real time speed monitoring. This policy is not only beneficial from a safety perspective, but has succeeded in changing employee driving behavior from aggressive drivers to defensive drivers. With the changes "This behavior reduces accidents and the severity of accidents drastically," said Carl.
The Subroto Award is the highest award from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to stakeholders who have performed the best as a reflection of the spirit of Prof. Dr. Subroto. He was Minister of Mines and Energy for the 1978-1988 period who made many extraordinary contributions in advancing the energy and mineral resources sector in Indonesia. In 2023 PTFI received an award in the Human Resources Competency Development category in the Energy and Mineral Resources Sector.
