Promoting Workplace Safety: CPR socialization at PTFI

22 February 2024

An initiative took place within PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) to enhance employee preparedness for emergencies during the 2024 National Occupational Health and Safety month (BK3N). A webinar to increase knowledge about CPR, was held on January 22 by the BK3N committee in collaboration with International SOS, which was attended by more than 110 participants from various departments.

The highlight of this activity was the CPR competition which featured 11 finalists based on the highest score from the online selection carried out in the webinar. This competition not only showcased the CPR skills of the participants but also served to increase motivation for other employees to improve their CPR emergency response capabilities.

This webinar focuses on three main topics that are important for effective basic life support emergency response, call Emergency Line at 546-7777 and recognizing signs of an unresponsive victim understanding the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED), and mastering Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques.

Ekta Wibowo, an International SOS instructor emphasized that "Performing CPR correctly within the first 5 minutes after the victim is unresponsive is very important because it can have a significant impact on the victim's survival."

Participants gained insights into identifying when someone may be in distress or unresponsive, and the immediate actions one should take when faced with a medical emergency. The significance of early intervention in emergencies cannot be overstated, and this event emphasized the critical role every individual play in ensuring a safe and prompt response.

This CPR socialization sessions also provides practical demonstrations and direct guidance for effective resuscitation techniques. Participants learned the proper compression-to-ventilation ratio and gained confidence in their ability to perform CPR should the need arise.

In addition to the participant-focused activities, a special sharing session was organized for the Senior Management staffs. This session aimed to foster a culture of safety within the organization's leadership, ensuring that safety measures and emergency preparedness are top priorities at all levels. The sharing session facilitated an open dialogue on how to further enhance workplace safety and emergency response protocols.

As we reflect on the success of this CPR socialization, it is evident that promoting a culture of safety within the workplace is not only a responsibility but a collective effort. By empowering employees with the knowledge and skills needed to respond effectively to emergencies, we contribute to a safer and more secure working environment.
