PTFI Community Economic Empowerment Program Aims for Enhanced Deliverables and Sustainability with Youth Involved in the Program
PT Freeport Indonesia Community Development team is partnering with local government and community organizations to seek improvement to its economic empowerment programs deliverables.
The signature Pronomi, which literally means economic programs in English, was pioneered and facilitated by PTFI Community Development and is being reformed to include advancing the community’s youth in their indigenous skills to adapt to the ever-evolving world. To enhance the program’s deliverables, Pronomi now also has Kamoro youth become one of the program beneficiaries.
For Kamoro people, the three S’s – sungai, sampan, sagu – or river, boat and sago are inseparable values in their life. As indigenous communities reside around the estuary, the river is their habitat where they live, gather food, as well as being a way to get around. The boat is still their primary mode of transport to navigate intertwined channels in the estuary to fish. Finally, for Papuans, sago is their main staple, like rice for many Indonesians. These three together are a distinct identity for the Kamoro people.
The Pronomi reform focuses on helping Kamoro people adjust to advancements in the world. While many Kamoro communities are now using motorized fiber boats to go fishing, they do not fully master the skills needed to maintain or repair the boat or the motor when they break down. In the past, local government, community organizations, and the company provided social aids to Kamoro people in motorized boats. They were trained to operate them; however, they still relied on the donors whenever something went wrong with their boat or motor. The advanced Pronomi aims to give more independence for Kamoro people to better adapt to the world.
With the youth now part of the target audience, the program is being designed to teach them necessary skills to preserve their tradition while improving their life. Incorporating youth in the economic agenda is deemed essential because, as the future generation, they need to be prepared and empowered for the future. Kamoro youth learn skills on fiber boat building, including the know-how to maintain the boat and the motor as well as troubleshooting and making repairs when the boat or motor brake down.
The Pronomi, a collaboration project between the Mimika Diocese economic development office and the PTFI Community Development team, has been in existence for many years. The program serves eight target villages – five on land (Nawaripi, Koperapoka, Tipuka, Ayuka, Nayaro) and three on the estuary (Omawita, Fanamo, Otakwa). It is designed to provide additional skill and knowledge to help Kamoro people improve their natural resources management to increase their potential economic resources. With Kamoro as the beneficiary, Pronomi was designed with a focus on fisheries, farm and agriculture capacity building.
