Town hall meeting with President of the Republic of Indonesia

31 August 2022

In his recent visit to Jobsite, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, had a chance to meet with around 600 select employee representatives from various divisions and departments in a town hall meeting at the Tembagapura Sports Hall.

During his speech at the event, Jokowi stated that apart from being one of the biggest contributors to state revenue, PT Freeport Indonesia also plays an essential role as a stimulant for Mimika Regency and Papua province’s gross regional domestic product growth. He praised PTFI employees’ hard work to make all the achievements accomplished.

“Last year’s revenue from PT Freeport Indonesia was around US$ 7.5 billion. Sixty-eight percent of Mimika’s Gross Regional Domestic Product is from Freeport and Papua’s GRDP is 34 percent. These are all incredible numbers,” Jokowi said. “You have important contributions to achieve that. So please continue to work safely and thank you for all your hard work.”

Richard Adkerson, Freeport-McMoRan’s Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, and Kathleen Quirk, President, Freeport-McMoRan, traveled to Papua to personally welcome the president and his entourage in Tembagapura. Adkerson echoed Widodo’s praise of the employees’ hard work in running such challenging and dangerous operations.

“It’s a great operation. During COVID-19, this great group of people has virtually completed the transition from one of the world’s largest open pit mines, which you’ll see tomorrow, to the mining industry’s largest underground mine that’s ever been done,” Adkerson said. “Thanks goes to our team, and I can’t tell you how proud I am to be part of it.”

In conjunction with the operations’ challenging nature, Adkerson emphasized that PTFI’s commitment is to prioritize workers’ safety so that the company can continue its safe and sustainable production to bring enhanced betterment for its stakeholders, including the local community and the nation.
