Papuan Growth Journey: Preparing Papuan Talent to Take on Strategic Roles at PTFI
TIMIKA – Papuan Affairs Division (PAD), in collaboration with the Learning & Organization Development (L&OD) Division, held a training program specifically designed for Papua Fresh Graduate Program (FGP) participants. The goal was to prepare participants with strong competencies and confidence for strategic roles at PTFI in the future. The training was held in the Timika Lowlands (May 22) and again in the Tembagapura Highlands (May 26).
Themed "Papuan Growth Journey," the event began with a sharing session by senior Papuan PTFI employees who had traveled the same path, starting as FGPs and now rising to leadership positions. For participants, hearing firsthand experiences of those who had been in similar positions felt more real and convincing than mere theory.
"Experience is incredibly powerful and valuable—something we can't find in books," said Soleman Faluk, Vice President of PAD PTFI. He emphasized the importance of learning from experience, both personal and others, as a means of building personal capacity.
The training was also enhanced with interactive simulations and in-depth discussions on mindset, professionalism, communication skills, and self-confidence. The session was enthusiastically received by participants, with a variety of questions and opinions.
Lowlands
The session in the Lowlands was attended by Waidani Wanggai, General Superintendent – Central Service Engineering PTFI, and Fahrun Revak, Manager of Bus Operations PTFI. Both participants shared their career journeys from the beginning, including the challenges and doubts they experienced when they first joined the company, and how they overcame them.
"Wherever you are placed, give the best version of yourself. Do it consistently, even when circumstances are unfavorable. Your quality is not determined by circumstances, but by your commitment," said Revak.
Vitalis Waraopea (Security Risk Management), a participant in the training, said he gained many new perspectives from the activity and gained confidence in facing professional challenges. "I felt the spirit of togetherness and the company values, which further motivated me to contribute significantly as a permanent employee," he said.
Highlands
Yan Sorondanya, Manager – UG DMLZ Production PTFI, led the sharing session for 14 participants in the Highlands. "My journey at PTFI began with small steps, in the same position as my friends now. I want to encourage my fellow FGP Papuans to be confident in their abilities. Stay open to learning, dare to try new things, and don't hesitate or be lazy about developing."
"This training was a meaningful first step for me. I learned a lot about communication, self-confidence, and how to conduct myself professionally in the workplace. The sharing session with senior Papuan ex-FGP employees also motivated me to continue learning. I am increasingly confident that we can develop and make the best contribution," said Ame Natkime (Global Supply Chain), one of the training participants in the Highlands.
This training demonstrates PTFI's concrete commitment to supporting the development of Papuan talent. Through PAD and L&OD, the hope is to produce a generation of Papuan employees who are professionally competent and possess strong character. This will enable them to make real contributions and stand on equal footing in the PTFI workplace.
