A significant stride towards gender equality and inclusivity in the workplace was realized through a two-day seminar commemorating International Human Rights Day on December 10. The event was organized by PT Freeport Indonesia’s Human Rights office of Community Relations department.

The seminar took place on December 12 at Kuala Kencana Multipurpose Building and on December 13 at Tembagapura Community Hall, attracting over 100 participants.

Keynote speakers for the seminar hailed from the Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN) and provided profound insights into gender equality in the workplace. Through discussions centered on the implementation of equality and inclusivity practices, participants gained a better understanding of the role individuals play in creating a fair and sustainable work environment.

Participants included PTFI employees as well as women from the Timika community, including  the Perempuan Mandiri SP-3 Community, Papuan Women Solidarity of Mimika Region, LP2 Stephanie and  Jaringan Perempuan Mimika

The seminar commenced with high spirits as Reza Sofyan, Manager-Sustainable Development,  Governance and Compliance, Community Affairs delivered the company's commitment in achieving gender equality. "We all play a role in creating a workplace that is equal for everyone," Sofyan said

Hardi, Manager-Manpower Management, echoed a similar message. "We believe diversity is a strength and gender equality is the foundation for sustainable growth," Hardi said, encouraging participants to actively engage in achieving collective goals.

Throughout the seminar, participants not only gained a deeper understanding of the importance of gender equality, but also recognized its tangible benefits. Gender equality is not just a matter of human rights. By creating an inclusive environment, companies can achieve better innovation, higher productivity and gain a competitive edge.

Mama Agustina Yatanea, a participant from Jaringan Perempuan Mimika, appreciated new insights she learned from the event. “I am pleased with this event. Besides gaining new information, we also could share with other participants. We support the gender equality efforts in the company. Our hope is that the company will organize more events like this, so that women in Timika can gain more positive information,” Yatanea said.

The seminar is one example of how PTFI is working towards its gender equality targets. PTFI’s collaboration with ICGN demonstrates its profound commitment to advancing equality and inclusivity in the workplace.

Hopefully, events like this can be organized, involving more organizations. The goal is to spread awareness about the importance of this issue, fostering greater consciousness of equality. Ros Kabuli, Kuala Kencana

Many challenges hinder women from returning to work in Tembagapura after marriage and childbirth. An obstacle they face is leaving their family when they return to Jobsite. A suggestion is to add suitable family size barracks so that mothers can bring their family and return to work. Edi Putro, Tembagapura

Central Services department predominantly comprises male workers. Hopefully, there is an increase of women hired in this department, including facilitating them with suitable barracks. The aim is to enhance accommodations for female employees. Asep Romansyah, Tembagapura
