Implementing Company’s Core Values as Foundation of Our Work

30 June 2020

Being the biggest copper mine in the country comes with complexities and challenges for PT Freeport Indonesia, including recognizing that to build a strong workforce, employees must be equipped with principles that provide a valuable foundation for doing the work.

“Without the company's values, it would be very difficult to achieve sustainable safe production. The values of this company already exist, but we must start within ourselves, and start now,” said Mark Johnson, Director-Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

That’s where SINCERE, the acronym of company’s core values—safety, integrity, commitment, respect, and excellence – comes in. First introduced in 2016 and adopted and launched at PTFI in 2017, the company is starting a new initiative to instill these principles throughout the workforce.

People are the company’s most valuable asset, so the company wants to help its employees embrace these values that will help foster a healthy growth of our business.

You will be hearing about the SINCERE values campaign as it’s introduced to all levels of employees through safety meetings, socialization classes, available training classes and other company activities. The global pandemic still occurring will not hinder efforts to move forward with this campaign. In fact, the Learning and Organizational Development Department who owns the program, will collaborate with several departments, including the Safety Division, Industrial Relations, Papuan Affairs Division, Corporate Communications and Quality of Life (including Yayasan Masyarakat Muslim and Badan Musyawarah Antar-gereja) to develop suitable delivery options using various tech-based mediums such as virtual meetings.

Leading by example

Leaders lead by example. This also applies to the application of SINCERE values at PTFI. From President Director to Vice Presidents, all leaders will have an active role and will be asked to contribute to the success of this core values campaign to help achieve the ultimate goal of sustainable safe production.

Those contributions started on February 21, 2020 when leaders from all PTFI divisions attended  a Vice President Behavior Workshop held by L&OD Department to kick off the SINCERE values campaign.

“Through SINCERE values, three behaviors can emerge: safety, collaboration and empowerment. These will stimulate the growth of trust at work. Trust will help us manage our resources, method, money, machine, material, minutes and people,” said Director, Executive Vice President-Human Resources and Security, Achmad Didi Ardianto.

These resources will help get us results that can be measured by safety, productivity and cost variables so sustainable safe production can be achieved and preserved.

Yan Pieter Sibarani, Vice President-Corporate Special Projects who heads up one of the campaign steering committees, explained the company's core values are not something new to us. “They were derived from what we have implemented in our work. Instilling  these core values will improve the capacity to achieve our targets.”

Leaders who attended the workshop enthusiastically participated in several sessions, led in turns by Mark Johnson, Zulkifli Lambali, Achmad Didi Ardianto, H-D Garz and Brian Esser, to discuss what behaviors were needed from both leaders and employees to ensure the program’s success.

Zulkifli Lambali, Executive Vice President-Site Operations and Technical Mine Manager (KTT), stated that to implement SINCERE values, we must start with ourselves before we can influence others.

At the end of the event, all participants signed a joint commitment to implement the results of the workshop in their divisions.
