PTFI Expands Clean Water Access for Residents, Grants 11 Kilometers of Pipes to Mimika Regency

Timika, 9 July 2026 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has presented the Mimika Regency government with grant of an 11-kilometers of pipes to speed up development of a clean water distribution grid aimed at providing more local residents with sustainable access to a safe clean water supply.  

“We appreciate the harmonious partnership built between PT Freeport Indonesia and the Mimika regency government. It is such collaboration that makes up the vital groundwork to accelerate infrastructure development, respond to the communities’ needs, and create benefits that are directly enjoyed by the entire population,” Mimika Regent Johannes Rettob stated in his address delivered during the ceremony to hand over 1,724 pipes that took place in the Mile 34 Lowland area in Kuala Kencana District, Mimika Regency on Thursday.

PTFI Director & EVP for Sustainable Development Claus Wamafma said the collaboration between PTFI and the Mimika regency government to provide clean water supply was a longstanding one. He said PTFI is committed to ensuring this collaboration brings real benefits through expansion of access to clean water, towards boosting the quality of life for Mimika residents.   

"This collaboration has long endured and is just one of many forms of collaboration entered into between Freeport and the government. This initiative also forms part of our commitment to continue working together with the Mimika regency government and offer continuing support, such that residents can access a clean water supply that is truly fit and safe for consumption,” Claus uttered.     

Handover of the grant was marked with signing of a Minutes of Handover (BAST) by the Head of Mimika Regency Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUPR) Office Inosensius Yoga Pribadi and PTFI Vice President of Government Relations Lenny Josephina and was witnessed by Mimika Regent Johannes Rettob and PTFI management ranks.   

The pipeline delivered under the grant consists of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes that will be used by the PUPR Office to expand the Clean Water Supply (SPAM) grid running from Water Treatment Plant (WTP) 430 in Kuala Kencana to Timika and surrounding areas. This program supports the Mimika Regency government’s target to provide 50,000 connections to homes by the end of 2027. Currently, 14,000 households are connected to the clean water supply grid.    

The collaboration for clean water supply entered into between PTFI and the Mimika Regency Government has been in place since construction of WTP 430 in Kuala Kencana. The facility built by PTFI for an investmentamounting to around Rp 150 billion consists of two water treatment units, two holding tanks with a total capacity of 2.5 million liters, and four pumping units able to deliver up to 200 liters of clean water.   

“Clean water supply is an investment made for the health, living quality, and future of residents. PTFI will continue as a development partner in collaboration with the Mimika Regency government to bring about real benefits for the population,” Claus stated. 
 
Details of the HDPE pipes delivered: 

  • HDPE Pipe PE100 PN16 SDR11 OD 250 mm (10 inch), 6 meters long: 1,285 sticks 
  • HDPE Pipe 50 mm (2 inch), 6 meters long: 185 sticks 
  • HDPE Pipe 75 mm (3 inch), 6 meters long: 250 sticks 
  • HDPE Pipe 75 mm (3 inch), 9 meters long: 4 sticks
