Qdenga Vaccine Contribution Supports Local Government’s Dengue Response

Timika, May 10, 2025 – Demonstrating the long-standing commitment to community health, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has contributed 6,000 doses of the Qdenga vaccine worth IDR 2.65 billion to the Mimika district government.
“As a longstanding partner to the Mimika district government, PTFI remains committed to supporting development efforts – particularly in public health,” said Claus Wamafma, Director & EVP Sustainable Development. “This contribution represents a shared focus on preventive care, complementing the important initiatives already underway.”
Dengue fever, locally known as Demam Berdarah Dengue (DBD), is a significant health challenge, particularly in tropical regions. Transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the disease can lead to high fever, intense pain, and in severe cases, life-threatening complications. According to the Mimika Health Office, 1,200 cases have been reported in Mimika so far in 2024.
The Qdenga vaccine marks a major advancement in the prevention of dengue fever. As a tetravalent vaccine, it is designed to protect against all four strains of dengue virus and is recommended for individuals ages 6 to 45. Clinical studies indicate that the vaccine offers strong protection against DENV1 and DENV2, and moderate protection against DENV3 and DENV4 in individuals who have not previously contracted the virus.
For regions like Papua – where geography, climate, and access to healthcare can heighten vulnerability to this disease – intervention such as this carry long-term value in easing public health burdens.
The official ceremony was attended by representatives from PTFI, the Mimika district government, and local healthcare teams, who will coordinate the vaccine’s phased distribution.
“We extend our sincere thanks to PTFI for this meaningful contribution in improving community health resilience in the district of Mimika,” said Johannes Rettob, the Regent of Mimika. “This kind of partnership brings real benefits to the public, and we will ensure the vaccines are distributed and administered accordingly.”
More than just a donation, this effort underscores the potential of collaborative action in advancing health outcomes and promoting shared progress. It reflects a broader commitment to long-term development – rooted in cooperation, care, and respect for the community.
The handover ceremony took place on Saturday (5/10) at the Community Health Center (Puskesmas) in Timika, marking another step forward in joint efforts to strengthen public health in the district.
