Our Prayers and Condolences for Freeport Indonesia
Profound sorrow is felt across the entire Freeport Indonesia family. Following an intensive and continuous series of search, excavation, and access drilling efforts, the five employees who were trapped by the rush mud have been located, on October 5, 2025.
At the time of the incident, the five employees were indicated to be working in the Raisebore area at the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) located in Mimika Regency, Central Papua. This work involves vertical drilling from bottom to top to construct a hole as part of the underground mine development process.
President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, Tony Wenas, who was at the jobsite with the PTFI Emergency Preparedness team, expressed his deepest condolences to all the families left behind following the incident at the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) underground mine.
“On October 5, 2025, PT Freeport Indonesia located the five missing colleagues who regrettably were found deceased. The Freeport family extends its deepest condolences to the grieving families and continues to mourn the loss of two colleagues found deceased on September 20, 2025,” Tony said.
For Tony, the news of this loss has brought profound sorrow to the entire Freeport Indonesia family and all associated stakeholders.
“Our prayers and heartfelt sympathies continue to be extended to the colleagues who have passed away, as well as to the grieving families. In addition, the company remains committed to providing full support and assistance to the bereaved families during this difficult time,” Tony said.
Heartfelt expressions of sympathy and profound sorrow were also conveyed by Richard C. Adkerson, Chairman of the Board, and Kathleen Quirk, President and Chief Executive Officer of Freeport-McMoRan, in their official statement, “We are grieving for our seven coworkers lost in this tragic incident and extend our sincere condolences to the families who lost loved ones. We appreciate the extraordinary efforts of the emergency response team who worked tirelessly to locate our coworkers. We are committed to investigating the cause of the incident and to taking all steps necessary to prevent recurrence.”
Currently, PTFI is working closely with Indonesian government authorities to review the incident and future operating plans.
“To all parties involved in the evacuation process, we extend our gratitude and appreciate the tireless efforts made by the PTFI Emergency Response Team in deploying all possible resources to complete this evacuation process," said Tony.
Amidst these challenging circumstances and the profound loss, we are collectively experiencing, Tony extends his heartfelt hope that the entire Freeport Indonesia family will remain resilient and united.
