Snow, Work, and Safety

26 January 2026 Papua

The last Monday of January 2026 will be remembered as a remarkable day at PT Freeport Indonesia’s jobsite. For the first time in more than 15 years, thick snow quietly returned, wrapping the Grasberg Open Pit in a white blanket and transforming a place usually defined by rock, and machinery into a scene of rare and breathtaking beauty.

In a country defined by tropical heat and seasons of rain, snowfall feels almost unbelievable—a phenomenon many Indonesians only know from stories, photographs, or distant lands with four seasons. Yet high above the clouds of Papua, Grasberg once again proved to be an exception. As snow fell gently across the rugged landscape, it echoed rare moments in history, previously recorded in 2003, 2007, and 2009, when nature briefly reminded us of its unpredictability and quiet power.

For the men and women working at Grasberg, this was more than a change in weather—it was an unforgettable experience. Amid the hum of mining operations, employees paused to feel the snow on the ground with temperature of -5 degree celcius, some seeing snow for the very first time in their lives, in the very place they carry out their daily duties. The cold air, the whitened slopes, and the sudden stillness created a shared moment of awe, connection, and gratitude—one that will be remembered long after the snow melts.

Behind the beauty of this rare event, however, stood a strong commitment to care and responsibility. PT Freeport Indonesia ensured that employee safety remained the highest priority. Work activities were carefully adjusted, special procedures for extreme weather were activated, and additional safety measures were put in place. Through discipline, preparation, and collective awareness, operations continued safely—proof that even in extraordinary moments, people come first.

Today, Grasberg was not only a workplace; it became a place where human effort and the wonders of nature quietly met, leaving behind memories as rare and precious as the falling snow itself. (lyr)
