Muslims Welcome the Holy Month in Jobsite
Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, is regarded by Muslims as the holy month of the year and is devoted to fasting, prayers and compassion to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad SAW.
The Freeport Indonesia Muslim Community Foundation (YMM) celebrates the holy month with various activities to give Muslims areas to worship in PT Freeport Indonesia operational areas.
There are 18 Mosques and Prayer Rooms supported by YMM from Portsite to Grasberg. At Jobsite, Muslims pray five times daily and special Ramadan prayer/Tarawih each night in jamaah (communally).
At the end the day, iftar (Ramadan break-fasting) meals are provided at Mosques with a large congregation, Edi Karyono Putro, said chairman of YMM Freeport Indonesia.
“Close to the iftar time, Muslims in Jobsite are enthusiastically coming to the Mosque. Special menus are served by Mosque Prosperity Board (Dewan Kemakmuran Masjid-DKM) members assisted by the congregations who are also employees,” he said.
“Although this year even with PTFI undergoing cost control, Muslims at Jobsite are still enthusiastic. YMM was able to invite a total of 24 Asatidz (priests) to Jobsite, where they alternately deliver tausiyah (sermon) at various mosques and prayer rooms in Jobsite,” Putro said.

Additional Story: Conducting the Holy Month from the Center of the Earth
Working at 1.760 meters below the ground surface is no obstacle for miners to conduct worship during the holy month.
Located in the PTFI Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine operational area, employees break their fast in Baabul Munawwar Mosque, continue with Maghrib prayer (the sundown prayer) in jamaah (communally).
“Night shift employees usually break their fast together at Baabul Munawwar Mosque then they will do Maghrib prayer in jamaah,” said Gatot Kusbinuko Leader of Baabul Munawwar Mosque DKM. “At the certain moment, after they pray in jamaah, Muslims listen to the tausiyah (sermon) delivered by guest Ustadz (priest),” he said.
“After they breakfast together and conduct the Maghrib prayer in jamaah, they continue working until break time at 11:30 p.m. During this break time, they will return to the mosque to conduct their postponed-Isya prayer (dusk prayer) and the night prayer in jamaah,” he added.
Sharing Joy and Compassion
The Freeport Indonesia Muslim Community Foundation (YMM) collaborates with Rumah Zakat as a philanthropic institution managing zakat (charity), infaq, alms, and other social funds collected from Muslims in Jobsite through various programs, providing Jobsite Muslims a much easier way to donate.
“YMM through the Amil Zakat Institution (LAZ-YMM) collects alms funds such as zakat and infaq for the ashnaf group (people in need or people eligible to receive charity). These ashnaf groups are orphans in Timika, Jayapura, Sentani, and even out of Papua. There are more than 217 scholarship opportunities from elementary to university level for the children in need.” said Edi Karyono Putro chairman of YMM Freeport Indonesia.
