The spirit of unity and togetherness filled the Kuala Kencana Town Square as employees, families and community members came together on Saturday, August 23, 2025 for the Nusantara Colla80ration Festival, a city event marking Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day. The celebration was vibrant mix of tradition, creativity, competition, and music, reflecting both the diversity of the archipelago and the close-knit community spirit of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI).
The events began in the early morning, with the much anticipates Bicycle and Decorated Vehicle Carnival parade. Around 37 children including several expat children proudly rode bicycles they had decorated with themes ranging from airplanes to “meatball vendors”, drawing smiles and applause from the crowd. 20 decorated vehicles with 320 participants paraded through the town square behind the children, representing divisions and community associations (paguyuban) groups who showcased traditional attributes from different regions of Indonesia, complete with energetic cheers for the judges.
The energy then shifted into high gear with an Amazing Race challenge featuring teams from the 11 Neighborhood Association or Community Unit of Kuala Kencana, competing in a lively 90-minute test of teamwork and strategy. Meanwhile, the smell of spices wafted through the air during the cooking competition, which pitted two teams from PTFI Management – nicknamed Big Bro and Lil Bro – against each other in a friendly culinary showdown. Adding prestige to the contest, Tony Wenas, President Director of PTFI also joined in as a judge, much to the excitement of employees and their families.
Entertainment flowed throughout the day, highlighted by performances from YPJ Kuala Kencana, group bands representing divisions and contractors, and even a special surprise when management members took center stage.
In his welcoming remarks, Erikson Daniel the Lowlands Committee Chairman reminded the audience of the deeper meaning behind the festivities. “This celebration is more than just entertainment – it is a reminder of how collaboration and togetherness are at the heart of Indonesia’s independence, and at the heart of our community here in PTFI.”
The festival also featured the announcement of competition winners from a series of contests held since early August leading up to Independence Day.
As the evening rolled in, the atmosphere turned electric with special guest performances. The crowd, amounting to more than 5000 people, danced and sang along with DJ Hannah, Faris Adam, spectated on the dazzling percussion and light show, and finally, the national group band Ungu featuring Bams, who closed the night with their signature hits.
The Nusantara Colla80ration Festival left a lasting impression – an unforgettable celebration of Indonesia’s 80 years of independence and a testament to the enduring spirit of unity in diversity within the PTFI community. (im)
