Kartini is more than just a national figure; she was a trailblazing advocate for women's education and empowerment amidst Indonesia's colonial era. Her vision was far ahead of her time, paving the way for women’s education and a renewed sense of resilience for Indonesian women navigating through societal barriers.
Each year on April 21st, we commemorate Kartini day with traditions like wearing kebaya and participating in many related activities. While these customs are beautiful tributes, there are richer narratives to explore that speak to the spirit of Kartini that still lives on today, even within Freeport Indonesia's women employees.
Let's reflect on the women who inspires us, those who carry the torch of Kartini in their own way. Whether it’s a mother, teacher, mentor, or friend, these women embody strength and wisdom. Together, we shall celebrate not only Kartini, but all the modern heroines who walk amongst us. Some of these heroes are among us, the women in PT Freeport Indonesia.
Chrisworo Citra, an employee from Operations Accounting, was inspired by her beloved mother. She said that her mother nurtured her children's dreams by postponing her own dreams in order to educate her children with great discipline and rigor. I have the courage to dream, be tough, and be confident is because of my mom. She said, "Don't think about working or becoming just a mother in the future. The goal of highly educated women is not to compete with men but to build a generation." Everything that has happened up to this point is not because of my greatness, but because of my mother's strong prayers and her very high ideals. An arrow will not reach its point without the bow and the archer's faith.
"Women who work in the mining world, especially Freeport Papua, make me proud because they not only work with special skills, but also have strong physical and mental resilience. Women's instincts that tend to be loyal to what they have make them have to be able to share focus for the best contribution at work, manage their families and face the challenges of the surrounding community, said Mariani Tobing, a female employee who has had a career with PTFI for 18 years. Her message to all PTFI mining women "Keep moving forward Kartini Freeport, work with Values, not just pursuing success." (Corporate Communications)
