At PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), our workforce is predominantly composed of contractors and partners, who constitute up to 80% of our manpower. Recognizing their critical role, it is imperative that we foster better interaction and engagement with our contractors and their employees, as they are now the major workforce of our operations.

Employee engagement is defined by the level of enthusiasm, involvement, and dedication employees exhibit towards their organization, team, and job. Engaged employees are those who are deeply involved, enthusiastic, and committed to their team and organization.

A comprehensive study by Gallup Inc. (2019) over the past two decades has consistently demonstrated the positive correlation between team engagement and performance across time and across different organizations. The study, which included 112,113 business and work units in 276 organizations, encompassing 2.7 million employees across 54 industries in 96 countries, revealed significant benefits of engagement:

  • Reduction in Safety Incidents: 64%; Absenteeism: 81%; Quality Defects: 41%.
  • Increase in Productivity: 14%; Customer Loyalty: 10%; Profitability: 23%

The KTT-PJO quarterly meetings (KTT/Kepala Teknik Tambang/Technical Mine Manager and PJO/Penanggung Jawab Operasi/Responsible Person from Contractor) are a key initiative to enhance our interaction and engagement with PTFI contractors. These meetings serve as a platform to communicate, cascade information, and discuss critical issues such as PTFI safety performance, recent Potential Fatal Events (PFEs), training and contractor competency improvements, and new government regulations impacting contractors. Additionally, the KTT team receives feedback, suggestions, and complaints from contractor representatives as part of our continuous improvement efforts. In Q1-2025, the meetings were held in Tembagapura on March 5th, involving 115 participants from PTFI and contractors, and in Kuala Kencana on March 7th, with 319 participants attending both online and offline.

We believe that the KTT-PJO quarterly meetings will significantly enhance our interaction and engagement with contractors, contributing to our commitment to safe and sustainable operations. By prioritizing engagement, we aim to build a more cohesive, productive, and safe working environment for all our employees and contractors. (Contributor: Eman Widijanto)
