Nabire, August 5, To celebrate the 80th anniversary of Indonesian Independence, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is committed to fostering a fighting spirit among students in Nabire Regency, Central Papua Province, by providing free education and eye examinations to 1,134 students.

On Tuesday, August 5, 2025, SMP Negeri 1 Nabire became the first location visited by PTFI, in collaboration with the Nabire Regency Government through the Education Office and the Regional General Hospital. A total of 629 students at the school will receive services until August 6, 2025. The next activity is scheduled for August 7-8 at SMP Negeri 4 Nabire. Providing education and eye examinations for students is a manifestation of PTFI's corporate values: a commitment to health and safety (Safety); demonstrating good and honest values (Integrity); commitment to the surrounding community in various community development programs; the value of mutual respect (Respect); and continuing to provide the best (Excellence) in all things. SINCERE (Safety, Integrity, Commitment, Excellence, Respect).

PTFI's Senior Officer of Community Health Development, Khairul Zaman Putra, explained that this eye examination is specifically aimed at 8th and 9th grade students. "The reason is that at that age, social media usage activities through gadgets and watching TV tend to be high, so before they realize there are vision problems, we want to intervene early with this free eye examination activity," said Khairul.

As a follow-up to this eye exam, if a student is found to have vision problems such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, PTFI has prepared 500 pairs of glasses to be distributed to them. PTFI remains committed to supporting education and health in Central Papua. "A good education also requires healthy vision.

The Head of the Nabire Regency Education Office, Dra. Dina Pidjer, commended PTFI for implementing the educational program and free eye examinations for students. She stated that this opportunity provides an opportunity for students who may have never had their eyes examined before. "This is a positive initiative because the goal is to improve eye health services for children, providing them with the opportunity to have their eyes examined, which they may not have had before. Now, PTFI has the opportunity to come directly to the school for eye examinations," Dina said.

"This is to help students address any eye problems they are experiencing so they can be treated early. I hope that with eye examinations like this, children with vision problems can be promptly treated by a team of doctors," Dina said.

Theresia Irianti Maker, the Vice Principal of Curriculum at Nabire 1 Junior High School, expressed her gratitude to the Education Office for recommending her school as one of the PTFI activity locations. Theresia expressed her appreciation for PTFI's free eye examination program for students, which is in collaboration with the Education Office and the Regional General Hospital (RSUD). This is because the school was unaware of the students' eye conditions.

"This is the first free eye examination at SMP Negeri 1. We welcome it with joy because our school has approximately 976 students. We have a health center, but we cannot guarantee the children's eye health. Usually, it's only discovered when they take police or military tests that some have damaged eyes, etc. This is part of early detection, and we welcome it with joy," Theresia said.

"I think this activity is very good. This is my first time having an eye exam, so I can learn about my eye condition. This is very important," said Yoananda, a ninth-grade student and student council president of SMPN 1 Nabire. According to Yoananda, these free eye exams will certainly help students at SMP N 1 Nabire learn about their eye condition and receive prompt treatment. "To PT Freeport Indonesia, we express our deepest gratitude for holding this activity at our school. Finally, we can find out whether our eyes are healthy or nearsighted and can consult with a doctor directly," Yoananda concluded.

In addition to education and free eye exams, the PTFI Eye Health program will also provide cataract surgery for 80 of the 645 patients who have undergone eye health screenings at 11 community health centers in Nabire.
