Manokwari, April 25, 2025 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) dan Papua University (UNIPA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further collaborate on the development of education, teaching, student and faculty training, research, community service, and information dissemination.
The MoU was officially signed by the Rector of Papua University, Dr. Hugo Warami S.Pd., M.Hum. and the PTFI President Director, Tony Wenas in Manokwari, Friday (4/25).
Tony Wenas highlighted that the partnership between UNIPA and PTFI has spanned nearly 30 years since 1995. “Today’s MoU represents a continuation of our long-standing collaboration, enriching with knowledge, academic insight, and research,” said Tony.
Tony emphasized that PTFI’s operations must be conducted responsibly, sustainably, and with a strong commitment to sustainable safe production. “One day, PTFI’s operations will come to an end, but that should not mean the end of life or opportunities for the surrounding communities. It is our collective responsibility to champion sustainable safe production,” Tony added.
Meanwhile, the Rector of Papua University, Dr. Hugo Warami S.Pd., M.Hum. expressed pride and gratitude for the renewed partnership with PTFI. “We hope this collaboration will continue to expand and reach even greater heights in the future,” the Rector said.
The Rector also affirmed the ongoing support of Papua University for PTFI in promoting sustainable mining practices through environmental research. “Through this partnership, Papua University remains committed to supporting PTFI and educating the wider community. Scientific studies offer evidence-based solutions to existing challenges, and their importance cannot be overstated,” the Rector stated.
On this occasion, Tony also announced PTFI’s commitment to providing additional scholarships for Papua University’s outstanding students. PTFI has built strong synergies with leading universities, including Papua University, to enhance human capital development in Papua, foster education and research, and empower communities around its operations through social investment programs in education, health, infrastructure, culture, and sports.
