As a member of EP&R, it is imperative that we strive for execellence. By committing and dedicating ourselves to improvement will not only benefit ourselves but also our team and others in critical situations. -- Benito Sabatino Vanderkley, Trengginas (Physical Strength) achievement.

In an effort to enhance operational safety through the implementation of the Basic Fire and Rescue Course (BFRC) certified training program, PT Freeport Indonesia  Mining Safety Division, trained seven new employees designated to work at the Smelter in Gresik. This 29-days comprehensive training session, held at Jobsite in Timika, is meticulously designed to confer official certification upon participants while equipping them with critical rescue skills necessary for effectively managing a variety of emergency situations that may arise.

Agus Simanjuntak, Superintendent, Mining Safety Division articulated that this training initiative constitutes a fundamental component aimed at ensuring employee preparedness to confront challenges encountered on the field. "Safety is our paramount concern. Through this training, we guarantee that employees not only grasp the theoretical aspects but are also adequately prepared to respond to emergencies in real-world scenarios. We regard this training as a vital investment in operational sustainability and the safety of all stakeholders involved,” said Agus.

This training program encompasses a diverse array of significant materials, specifically basic fire, basic mountaineering, basic hazmat, basic extrication, basic confined space, and water rescue. Furthermore, it is supplemented by a rigorous physical training regimen designed to ensure that participants are adequately prepared in both mental and physical capabilities.

Mohammad Yafie, a participant possessing a medical background, stated that he encountered considerable challenges during this training, particularly the high angle rescue technique. He revealed, "I am used to medical situations, but high angle rescue is a very different experience. This gives me a new challenge and motivates me even more to be part of the rescue team on the front lines".

Additionally, Nur Wahidatur Rohmah, one of the seven employees who took part in the second batch of training  conveyed her profound enthusiasm. "Firefighting is an aspect that I like most about this training. As a female firefighter, I encounter certain limitations; nevertheless, this training compels us to improve and become stronger than we were upon our initial arrival. It is immensely satisfying for me to learn skills that will contribute to the preservation of lives,” she stated.

"We train participants to confront real-life situations. The rigorous physical training and simulations we implemented were aimed to equip them with the capacity to think swiftly and take decisive action, as well as to collaborate effectively under hazardous conditions. This preparation encompasses not only technical competencies but also the necessary mental and behavioral readiness," said  the team’s coach and mentor, Purnomo who has 17 years of experience in emergency response, underscored the critical significance of discipline and teamwork in every rescue mission.

With the comprehensive support from management, this training initiative is anticipated to produce a rescue team that exhibits a high degree of resilience and is adequately prepared to address a variety of emergency scenarios that may arise within PTFI's work environment.

The second batch of training, which was attended by seven employees, was closed with at the Base Camp Station on October 24, 2024 with the distribution of their certificates of completion for all participants, recognizing their dedication and hard work.
