Exhibits and performances celebrating Kamoro culture were the highlight of festivities put on at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport during the recent 2018 Asian Games.

As one of the main gateways to Indonesia, the airport was decorated to provide a memorable welcome for athletes and supporters visiting from various parts of Asia.

Airport Terminal 3 was the place to be – with the Asian Games mascot, a mini-badminton and soccer court, and a photo booth with a backdrop of Indonesian President Joko Widodo riding a bicycle. Passengers also enjoyed cultural exhibitions presented by the Creative Economy Agency (BEKRAF), the Jember Festival and the Kamoro Tribe.

The Jember Festival exhibition showcased traditional Indonesian costumes – including the Garuda costume worn during the Asian Games opening and closing ceremonies – as well as the national costumes of other countries participating in the games. Passengers enthusiastically took pictures with the models wearing the captivating clothes.

The Kamoro Tribe performed energetic dances donning traditional costumes and invited those watching to join in. Kamoro artists also put on woodcarving demonstrations to show the tribe’s rich sculpting culture – which has produced beautiful arts, ranging from carved shields to  elaborate ornamental sculptures more than 160 cm tall.

Visitors to the Kamoro exhibit were deeply impressed by the culture and beautiful, but rarely seen traditional costumes, with many asking to snap a selfie alongside tribal members.

One Turkish tourist, excited to meet the tribe after learning about similar tribes on T.V., said the Kamoro indeed have a unique and great culture. An Italian tourist, who had visited Raja Ampat, shared that sentiment and said the exhibit made her want to visit Papua again. (Descia Anggi, edited by Sularso)
